Dr Arun Gupta

Arun spent his formative years growing up in Melbourne near Monash University. He later attended medical school at the University of Melbourne (1998) where he spent several years at Ormond College. He completed his residency at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, and underwent advanced specialty training in gastroenterology and endoscopy in Sydney at Westmead Hospital and Royal North Shore Hospital, working with Professor Michael Bourke and Associate Professor Ian Norton, amongst many others.

Dr Gupta subsequently went on to complete a clinical fellowship in the Translational Gastroenterology Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, United Kingdom. He worked for Professor Simon Travis (who developed the Oxford criteria for acute severe ulcerative colitis), as well as with the late Professor Satish Keshav. He also worked with distinguished colleagues Dr Adam Bailey, Professor James East, Dr Jane Collier and Dr Roger Chapman.

After working for a period of time in regional North Queensland, Arun went onto a senior academic role on staff at the Canberra Hospital where he played an active role in mentoring junior doctors, including involving them in clinical research projects. He was a long-standing committee member on the Drug and Therapeutics Committee as well as on the the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) at the Canberra Hospital, and played a strong role as patient advocate for improving quality and safety and reducing waiting lists within the department.

Arun held the academic title of clinical lecturer at The Australian National University and was awarded the Doctor of Medicine research doctorate in 2015 through the University of Melbourne for his work with Professor Finlay Macrae, AO at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. He is a member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia, the American Gastroenterology Association and the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation. Arun fulfilled the criteria for the GESA Colonoscopy Recertification Program in October 2018.
